What is the recommended number of credit cards for the average consumer?
Three or four.  One for little stuff, one for big stuff, and one for emergencies.  If you use credit cards for business purposes, then get a fourth card.

How do you calculate the average daily balance?
You simply add the balance for each day during the billing cycle and then divide by the number of days in the billing cycle.  For example, you have a $0 balance for the first 15 days of the billing cycle and then make a $3,000 purchase on the 16th day of a 30-day billing cycle.  Your average daily balance would $1500 ([$0 x 15 days] + [$3,000 x 15 days] = $45,000 / 30 days = $1,500).
